Patient satisfaction high after bilateral implantation with new trifocal IOL

Satisfaction was high amongst patients who underwent uncomplicated bilateral cataract surgery with a trifocal IOL (AcrySof PanOptix; Alcon), which provided a high level of spectacle independence at all working distances, according to data presented at the 2021 ASCRS Annual Meeting.

In this prospective single arm, unmasked, non-randomized study, 30 patients were assessed at 1 month and 3 months following implantation.

At 3 months follow-up, 85% of eyes had a refraction within 0.50 D of plano with ≤ 0.50 D of refractive cylinder.

Uncorrected and best distance corrected mean binocular visual acuity was better than 20/25 (logMAR 0.1) at all test distances. Overall, ≥ 90% of patients reported never wearing glasses or wearing them only a little; functioning without glasses; and being “completely” or “mostly” satisfied with their vision without glasses or contact lenses at all working distances or most of the time.
